Powell Renominated for Fed Chair But Biden Will Reshape the Fed to His Liking

Link:https://mishtalk.com/economics/powell-renominated-for-fed-chair-but-biden-will-reshape-the-fed-to-his-liking

Excerpt:

Recall that former Fed Chair Ben Bernanke commented “Only three opinions matter, the Fed Chair, vice Chair, and President of the New York Fed.”

When it comes to banking regulation, we need to add vice chair of bank supervision.

Biden has will have named three of these four slots but Powell is a holdover.

Is everyone happy?

Nancy Pelosi Says a Wealth Tax on Billionaires’ Unrealized Gains is On the Way

Link:https://mishtalk.com/economics/nancy-pelosi-says-a-wealth-tax-on-billionaires-unrealized-gains-is-on-the-way

Excerpt:

In the scramble to find a tax hike that all 50 Democrat Senators could support, Senator Kyrsten Sinema OKs a Tax on Billionaires’ Unrealized Gains.

….

The proposal by Senator Elizabeth Warren is a genuine wealth tax and easily could be tossed by the Supreme Court.  Warren obviously does not give a damn.

Regardless, expect legal challenges based on the 16th Amendment.

The proposal taxes unrealized gains. But is there “income” before gains are realized? The courts will decide if this goes forward, but the idea is dubious at best.

MishTalk TV Episode #1: Is Inflation Transitory or Not?

Link: https://mishtalk.com/economics/mishtalk-tv-episode-1-is-inflation-transitory-or-not

Excerpt:

The great debate is whether or not inflation is transitory.

I discuss the pros and cons with Chris Temple at the National Investor.

Chris is primarily in the “not transitory” camp, especially in regards to energy.

I discuss the “it is transitory” case.

In  my view, much depends on what Congress does or doesn’t do and I do not think the matter is settled, depending of course on the duration of “transitory”.

Huge Credit Stress Starting in China May Easily Rock the Whole World

Link: https://mishtalk.com/economics/huge-credit-stress-starting-in-china-may-easily-rock-the-whole-world

Graphic:

Excerpt:

If funding stress signs don’t emerge, don’t conclude that there is no contagion. Contagion is playing out already if you know where to look.”

The mess in China does not stop with Evergrande.

…..

Everglade shows the theft of wealth and money in a giant Ponzi scheme, not to be confused with real savings (i.e. net tangible assets at true market value)!

There is no savings glut.

The alleged savings glut is nothing but a fiat Ponzi scheme where central banks have to keep money supply soaring to keep asset prices (based on debt) from imploding!

How much longer this setup can continue before it blows up in a currency crisis, war with China, or some other major economic disruption remains a key mystery.

How Many People Are Now Covered by Unemployment Insurance?

Link: https://mishtalk.com/economics/how-many-people-are-now-covered-by-unemployment-insurance

Graphic:

Excerpt:

In April of 2020, there were 145.67 million people covered by unemployment insurance but only 133.33 million people working.

This unusual inversion had never happened before. It lasted 4 months, April through June of 2020.

Covered Employment data is weekly, ending Saturday and lags by a week. I use a “monthly average” which run through July vs the employment level series which runs through August.
